Never married. In the Civil War at Antietam, a bullet went through his wrist and surgeons elected to take off the hand, for which he never forgave them. He stayed in the 20th Infantry through the Indian Wars. Custer didn't take him to Little Big Horn because he had only one hand. He accumulated a small fortune gambling.
