Worked unloading boats at the dock. Opened a feed store in German Community with dad at 136 Carr. Operated it alone until it was established. The family sold the feed store in 1860 to Grener. Returned to docks. Joined 3rd Mo Volunteers in 4/1861. Helped save St. Louis and the arsenal. Then was defeated at Wilson Hill. Was shot in hip & left on battle field for 3 days. Blood poisoning from wound caused his death.
